Mrs Moses Hopkins

OverviewVersions

Description

Emily Jane (Benedict) Hopkins (1841-1925), in 1884 married Moses Tudway Hopkins (1817-1892), brother of railroad magnate Mark Hopkins (1813-1878). Moses had not married at a younger age because he had little money as a farmer but when his brother died without leaving any of his wealth to Moses, he negotiated with his brother's widow to a compromise in which he received roughly three million dollars. He made a trip East in 1884 and married Miss Benedict of New York, who came from a prominent family there.
