Description

Bertha Berner (1861-1945) was Jane Lathrop Stanford's private secretary from 1884 until Mrs. Stanford's death in 1905. Berner lived with the Stanfords in Sacramento, San Francisco and on the Stanford campus and also accompanied them when they lived in Washington, D.C. She later was given a house, known as Monte Verde, by Mrs. Stanford, on the corner of Sand Hill Road and Junipero Serra Boulevard. Berner was a suspect in the death of Mrs. Stanford as she accompanied her to Honolulu but was exonerated.
