Description

John McAllister Schofield (1831-1906) was promoted to Major General for the Union forces in the Civil War. He was appointed U.S. Secretary of War from 1868 to 1869 and was Commanding General of the U.S. Army from 1888 to 1895, being promoted to Lieutenant General at the end of his command. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1892 for gallantry in the Civil War.
