Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) was a military man who was rapidly promoted to the rank of Major General in the Union Army during the Civil War after impressing his superiors with his battle acumen. He was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1869 and to General of the Army in 1888, shortly before he died. In 1875 he married Irene Ann Rucker (1856-1938), daughter of General Daniel Henry Rucker (1812-1910).
