Description

Joseph Roswell Hawley (1826-1905) was a journalist, newspaper editor and owner, Civil War General, and politician from Connecticut. He served as Governor of Connecticut from 1866 to 1867, served over four years in the U.S. House of Representatives, and was a U.S. Senator from 1881 to 1905. He was a Senator during Leland Stanford's entire tenure in the Senate.
