Dora MaxsonIsadora "Dora" Rich Maxson (1857-1910), wife of Willis Edward Maxson (1864-1952) who became vice-president and general manager of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe railroad. He was agent and superintendent of terminals for the railroad in Galveston from 1897 until 1901 when he became manager of the Beaumont division.
The Great Galveston hurricane on Sep. 8, 1900, was the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history, with 8,000 estimated dead, most in Galveston. This is the storm mentioned in Dora Maxson's Jan. 7, 1901 letter to Jane Stanford.
