Flora Hartley Greene

Flora (Hartley) Greene (1865-1948) received a B.S. degree in Education from Indiana State Normal School (now Indiana State University) in 1890. She was a member of the Stanford Pioneer Class and was awarded an A.B. in Zoology in 1895. She helped with the opening of the Hopkins Seaside Laboratory, along with her future husband Charles Wilson Greene (1866-1947), which was overseen by David Starr Jordan in June 1892. She wrote articles for scientific publications including the Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences while working on her A.B degree and was manager of the women's basketball team. She married in 1895 and remained at Stanford, working as assistant curator of the Zoological Museum in 1895-1896 and as Assistant in Organic Evolution from 1895 to 1900. The family followed Charles' career to Columbia, Missouri in 1900 and in 1909 Flora received an M.S. in Home Economics from the University of Missouri. She was very involved in social issues including women's suffrage and child welfare.
