William Morris Stewart (1827-1909) dropped out of Yale to go to California for the Gold Rush in 1850. He studied law and became District Attorney of Nevada county in 1852, became acting Attorney General of California in 1853, and then moved into private law practice in San Francisco. In 1860 Stewart moved to Virginia City, Nevada, and worked on mining litigation, helping to exploit the Comstock Lode. In 1864, when Nevada gained statehood, Stewart was appointed by the state legislature to serve as U.S. Senator from Nevada. He was a Senator from 1865 to 1875 and again from 1887 to 1905.
