Frederick D. Grant

Frederick Dent Grant (1850-1912) was the oldest child of U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant and Julia Dent Grant. He graduated West Point in 1871 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1873. After resigning from the military in 1881 he led a civilian life until 1898 when he joined the New York Volunteers as a colonel in the Spanish-American War, then promoted to brigadier general, and becoming brigadier general in the Regular Army in 1899 during the Philippine-American War. He was promoted to major general in 1906, the rank he held on his death in 1912.
