Ida Honoré Grant

Ida Marie Honoré Grant (1854-1930) married Frederick Dent "Fred" Grant (1850-1912), son of President Ulysses S. Grant, in 1874. Ida lived at the White House with her parents-in-law while her husband served with General George Custer, being allowed leave for the birth of their first child and thus avoiding the Battle of the Little Bighorn in which all of Custer's regiment was killed. After Fred resigned from the military in 1881 they settled in New York where Fred worked and helped his father write his memoirs. In 1889 Fred was appointed ambassador to Austria-Hungary and the family moved to Vienna, returning to New York in 1894 where Fred became Police Commissioner until 1898 when he re-enlisted to serve in the Spanish-American War. Fred was ultimately promoted to Major General and Ida accompanied him during his assignments. After Fred died Ida moved to Sarasota, Florida, to be with her sister. When her sister died she moved to upstate New York briefly to be with her son Ulysses S. Grant III, but soon moved to Washington, D.C., where she lived until her death.
