Andrew D. White

Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918) was a Professor of History, the co-founder and first President of Cornell University from 1866 to 1885. He took leave from Cornell to take on diplomatic assignments and later became ambassador to Germany (twice) and Russia. He was asked to be the first President of Stanford University but declined and recommended his former student, David Starr Jordan, who admirably filled the position.
