Mr Choate

Joseph Hodges Choate (1832-1917) was a lawyer, practicing in New York, who was involved in many of the most well-known legal cases of the time. He was the lawyer representing Jane Stanford in the government's suit against the estate of Leland Stanford that attempted to recoup bond debt from stockholders of the railroad companies that developed the nationwide rail transportation network. Choate was appointed Ambassador to the United Kingdom by President William McKinley in 1899 and served in that capacity until 1905.
