Dr. NewtonDr. Richard Heber Newton (1840-1914) was an Episcopal clergyman who accepted the position of pastor of Stanford Memorial Church in mid-1902. He arrived on campus Dec. 9, 1902 and delivered the sermon at the dedication for Memorial Church on January 25, 1903. By early May of 1903 he had submitted his resignation, remaining through May for Graduation. After his departure the position of pastor was dropped, leaving the chaplain as the ranking clergyman. Dr. Newton's early career as a minister began in Philadelphia and he was the rector at All Soul's Church in Manhattan from 1869 until 1902. He published several books that were collections of his sermons.
