E. H. Woodruff

Edwin Hamlin Woodruff (1862-1941) was hired by David Starr Jordan as university librarian when Stanford University opened in 1891. In the fall of 1893 when Law Professor Nathan Abbott took a leave of absence, Woodruff, who had a Law degree from Cornell University and had taught freshman and sophomore English classes there, was called on to teach in the Law School. He continued as university librarian and became Acting Professor of Law. In the spring of 1896 Professor Woodruff received an appointment to a chair of Law at Cornell. He served as acting dean of the Cornell Law School from 1914 to 1916 and was dean from 1916 to 1921, retiring in 1927.
