My Dear Mrs. Stanford
I can not tell
you the grief with which
I learned of your great
affliction.
When I saw Mr. Stanford
the last time in your
presence at Washington
I felt great hope of his
recovery & that the
country and world as well
as his Friends would be
blest in his restoration
to more active life for years
to come.
I was suddenly called
away from Washington
& when I called at the
