expanded powers might have accomplished which now no one will do or which if ever done will linger for many years in accomplishment, we are almost ready like him of the older time, to reply against God.

But I must not burden you with words in your supreme sorrow.

You know better than others the only source of consolation, and how inadequate are all things but God to support in such a bereavement!

May your hope and strength fail not and may the Everlasting Arms embrace you.

When I saw Mr. Stanford the last time in your presence at Washington I felt great hope of his recovery & that the country and world as well as his Friends would be blest in his restoration to more active life for years to come.
