How rapidly would it hasten the millenium if this sentiment were acted upon by the very [rich?].

It must be a source of infinite comfort to you, dear Mrs Stanford, to have been the co-worker of so great and noble a soul as it must also be to feel that you are spared to still further carry out the phalanthropic work your loving hands laid out.

You may feel assured that thousands who have never known you or your dear husband personally have yet given you their prayers & blessings & have claimed you as friend because you have been the friends of mankind.

I have not the right to obtrude upon y the sacredness of your mourning but as one of many of those who have known your lives & have watched the unfolding of your plans from afar, I beg to extend my poor tribute to your deceased husband's memory & to speak a consoling word to you.

My dear Mrs. Stanford,

When I heard of the death of your noble husband, my heart went out to you in your great sorrow. At a time like this when we are robbed of those we love, words are useless, but you have the Sacred Heart of our kind and loving Savior, who alone can comfort and sus tain you under this heavy cross.

You know yourself what

your beloved husband possessed in an eminent degree, and that sweet charity with which he dispensed so generously, will, I trust, be his bright reward in his only true home.

It would not be out of place to call your attention to something which perhaps, has escaped your notice. Your angelic son died on June 21, the day on which we, Catholics, keep the Feast of St. Aloysius, the patron of students. The great Leland Stanford University was dedicated on the same date, June 21, and now, you can, for the future, com-

memorate a third went on this self same date. Do you not think that your long-absent son came to meet his loved father, to show him the road to the Sacred Heart?

One only good we can do for those gone before us, and that is, to pray for them. Our loved and kind Sister Superior has asked the Sisters of her commu nity to pray for Mr. Stanford in a very special manner, and I assure you, I shall remember him frequently in my whisper ings to Him who does all things for the best. It will be a sweet

duty for me to pray for you also, dear Friend. May God bless and comfort you. I cannot pour into your wounded heart the balm which He alone can give.
