It is with profound sor -row, but not with surprise that I no-tice by the New York papers of yesterday an announcement of the death of Senator Stanford, a great loss to the Country at large, but a greater loss to you his wife, who have been call -ed upon to triumph with him in his singular prosperity, and in his sorrows. It is with profound sorrow, but not with surprise that I notice by the New York papers of yesterday an announcement of the death of Senator Stanford, a great loss to the Country at large, but a greater loss to you his wife, who have been called upon to triumph with him in his singular prosperity, and in his sorrows. Though not intimately acquainted with Mr. Stanford it was my privilege to know of him, through

our mutual friend Mr. Lincoln whom I saw the day he left Springfield for Washington - whose remains I received at the State Capital of the Old Court House in Springfield and followed to the grave.
I also had the pleasure of meeting in company with Senator Edmond of Vermont, and others, at the house of Senator Miller of California when present to solemnize the marriage of my son Lieut Clover to his daugter [sic] Dora. My son is now absent on leave in California, and I trust may be al[lowed] to be present at the funeral of Senat[or] Stanford with his wife, both of whom I know esteemed him with deep af -fection, and to whom they were un -der obligations.
