To
The Memory of
Senator Leland [J?] Stanford,
Education's Greatest Friend,
Humanity's Illustrious Benefactor.

By His friend and Admirer,
Robt W. Douthat of West Virginia.

No mausoleum grand, love-built and crowned
By groups colossal and statues tall;
No sculptured marble, bronze or gold;
Orations loud, nor song of bard;
No organ's peal, nor living choir;
No funeral train of man and horse;
No tolling bell from lofty dome;
No cannon's slow and heavy sound;
No lowered flags from mast or tower

Can Half the Honour Show

As hearts that shall forever praise
The name of him and her, whose gifts
The centuries old shall yearly celebrate;
As youth whose minds enlarged
Shall knowledge fill and fructify,
Whose soul's expanded grasp
Shall virtues grace and glorify,
Whose lives the world shall beautify.
