My dear Mrs Stanford

I want to write to you words of love and sympathy in this hour of your great affliction. Oh that I could do something to comfort your aching heart! The last time I saw your noble husband was in calling at your house in Washington, you were absent and he kindly came down to the carriage and had a little chat with me so pleasantly, and he look'd so well I can hardly believe that he has left us.

It is not only your great be[re]avement, but the [wo]rld feels his loss; for which he was doing so much. I know from sad experience your loneliness in having the love'd one by whose side you have walked so many years taken from you. He has gone to join that precious son in his Heavenly Home. Do not feel dear Mrs Stanford that you are left alone, hear the voice of God to you, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismay'd for I am thy God: I will stre -ngthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. I remember back to days long ago - when we were much younger and our lives were filled with happiness and the light thoughts of this world - how happy you were in the companionship and devotion
