Your loss will be felt and shared by many. and your Husbands place in the State. in the Senate. and in the hearts of the people. cannot indeed be easily filled. But few lay down the burden of life so perfectly rounded. so full of thought for others and with such nice and generous provisions for the elevating of mankind.

Sincerely Yours Grace McClure Dixon.

No. 225 MADISON AVE.

My dear Mrs Stanford

I want to write to you words of love and sympathy in this hour of your great affliction. Oh that I could do something to comfort your aching heart! The last time I saw your noble husband was in calling at your house in Washington, you were absent and he kindly came down to the carriage and had a little chat with me so pleasantly, and he look'd so well I can hardly believe that he has left us.

It is not only your great be[re]avement, but the [wo]rld feels his loss; for which he was doing so much. I know from sad experience your loneliness in having the love'd one by whose side you have walked so many years taken from you. He has gone to join that precious son in his Heavenly Home. You have great cares devolving upon you, perhaps it is better so, as they will occupy you to the exclusion of saddening thoughts but I trust strength may be given you to perform all the duties you have taken upon yourself in carrying out the mutual wishes of yourself and Senator Stanford - with sincere love which has been the growth of years and with kindest wishes for your dear health. I am believe me, yours devotedly

My Dear Mrs Stanford.

My thoughts are with you continually in your loneliness. My sympathies go out to you. And I feel constrained to write you in memory of long friendship. I remember back to days long ago - when we were much younger and our lives were filled with happiness and the light thoughts of this world - how happy you were in the companionship and devotion
