Dear Mrs Stanford

My heart goes out to you in your great affliction. May God comfort you and give you strength, for I have been through the fiery furnace and know that no human aid can relieve your pain.

My dear Mrs. Stanford, -

Having just returned from the country and learning of your sad berevement, [sic] I cannot resist writing, to express to you, my deep sympathy at your loss. I do not say his country's or the people's loss, for he has sacrificed his noble life in this cause - but your loss is irreparable - few can understand the utter loneliness caused by such a separation of two lives so dependent upon each other for love and comfort. Yet dear Madam God softens even our greatest woes. The Senator must have passed from this life absolutely without pain - you have had a partial preparation for a long time, I felt when he

left here that I should never see him again.

Think of the great work he has left you to complete, that in spirit you can be constantly with him in this work, carrying out his desires so frequently gone over by you both.

The Senator won my heart as he won thousands of others, by his gentle kindness and consideration, he was so different from the type of what I know as rich men.

Be brave and know that though God's cross seems heavy to bear, yet what he has done has been in love and kindness.

Again expressing our deep sympathy I am dear Madam

Very sincerely yours

W.W. Evans
