Mrs. Leland Stanford;
Dear Madam:-
I enclose herewith a marked copy of our issue for this week, desiring to add to your cup of comfort in bereavement any drop that may come from your knowledge of the impression made on the minds of thoughtful Presbyterian clergymen by the career of your honored husband, & especially by his contribution to the welfare of the people in the erection of the university. I would not have you suppose that any silence of men of our faith proceeds from inability to appreciate the Christian quality in Mr. Stanford's life and in the platform of the university. For fear I might be in error as to the views of others I took occasion to read the editorial to two of my clerical brethren before printing it, & the both applauded, & urged that I print it, as simple justice. Personally I could have spoken in stronger terms, but it is not always judicious to attempt to say all one thinks, especially when one holds a representative capacity & in some sense speaks for a large body.
May the God of all grace make his grace abound to you, and show you the path of consolation and strength, whose direction you well know; & grant you the full fruit of that beatific companionship which resides in Christ for all who love him & who serve the people in his name.
Sincerely yours, W. W. Faris.

My dear Mrs. Stanford
I cannot express to you the sorrow I felt this morning on seeing the death of your dear husband. Truly a great and good man has passed away, and your heart is now asunder by the broken ties, which will only be for a short time, when you will be reunited and

your great consolation at this time must be that he was so ready to go, and that he had lived on the vast enterprises he had planned in sucessful [sic] operation and that now he has gone to visit his loved ones on the other shore. Truly my dear Mrs Stanford my heart goes out in the most sincere sympathy for you and I trust you may be sustained by that Higher Power.

which has led you through so many trials and has sustained and blessed you, and helped to establish such grand facilities for the benefit of the rising generation. Truly your goodness and charity with his will endure for all time and be a lasting memorial to you both and to your beloved Leland.
Mr Farrington and the family all join in sincere sympathy and love.
