My dear Mrs. Stanford:-
A myriad of hearts beat in sympathy with you, in your deepest grief; for, the sons and daughters of a great state are filled with the common sorrow in the loss of Senator Stanford. Specially, I mourn his loss, for to me, he was not only a great man, and public benefactor, but a personal friend whose kind words did much to strengthen me in my early struggles.
