to find I was & paid to die I do not understand it. I cannot see why I am left that is no use to any one & really no company to any one not even myself. Why I should be left & a good and usefull man like your husband should be taken away. as I said before your husband was so good, that "God" took him in his arms while he slept think of the blessing of going to sleep in this world and awaken up in heaven.

With love & condolence

Jun 23/93 Your sincere friend

I suppose you have entirely forgotten me but my husband I am sure you remember and John Geforst's name was never that of a stranger to Mr Stanford.

I could not write you when your boy was taken away:- I remember him when he was a tiny child and sorrow had never come to either of us, and as I looked at my own boy, it seemed too deep a grief for me to trespass on,- and then you had your husband to share it all with you, - (I was already alone with my little son and daughter)

But now that he has gone from you,- I want to tell you how from our quiet home I have watched all these years, his unselfish noble and upright career, his unceasing benefactions, and most of all have I watched the progress of the great memorial to your dear boy, and how I have grieved with you that you are left standing alone to go on with his work and to fulfil all his wishes to the end.

I will not weary you with more words, but will you not accept my most sincere and earnest sympathy.

Perhaps, some day you may write me a line to tell me that my letter was acceptable to you, and that in your far away and beautiful home, you feel that

I am very sincerely your friend Anna M Geforst

"Woodlawn"

July 4/93

My dear Mrs Stanford

I know that you are surrounded by sympathizing friends, and perhaps almost burdened with letters, all bearing messages of kindness and condolence, but which are (I know by experience) but as empty sounds, - for "in the presence of a deep affliction the soul sits dumb." -

But I wanted so to write to you, and if my letter has come too soon, you can lay it aside and read it when a lonely time comes.

you strength to persevere, remembering in a short time, you will be united to your loved ones forever.

How happy your dear husband is now, enjoying the reward of his many noble deeds & well spent life. "Well done my good & faithful servant, enjoy the kingdom prepared for you" must comfort his departed soul.

The ways of Providence seem beyond our comprehension for Death seems ever to select the most useful & dearest ones of our households.

I pray for you daily, that God may bless and strengthen you in this your hour of sorrow. He alone can comfort you. Remember He says, "Take up thy cross & follow Me." Every heart has its sorrow showing us this world is only a place of suffering to prepare us for our home in heaven. With love & sympathy, I remain,

Sincerely Yours,

Grace H. Gilmor
