Mrs. Senator Stanford,

Dear Madam,

I have just read the sad news of Mr. Stanfords death, my brother Hugo Detlefsen having sent me the paper.

I hope you will accept my sincere sympathy in Your great bereavement. Knowing how deeply You and Mr. Stanford were attached to each other the loss must have been a crush to your Heart, but, I hope you will bear up.

I trust these few lines of condolence will be received with kindness I have watched your husbands career with intense intrest and approbation.

His heart must have beat in unison with humanity or he never would have been so grandly generous. Mr. Stanford is the "shining light," among philanthropists of the present century. The world is poorer, since loosing so good a man.
