Mrs Senator Stanford.

My dear Madame.

As one who stands
aside, with earnest but silent
sympathy, till nearer friends
have had their rightful precedence
in offering you their mead of
Consolation, I have held my peace
whilst all my heart went out to
you in your great bereavement.
Greater than that which falls to
the ordinary lot of woman in that

all other men in those attributes
that command the highest
Admiration of Mankind.
His loss is not yours alone! It is
the whole Nations. America has lost
in him her noblest and most unselfish
