(4) its greatest benefactors. I do not recall in history a single instance when one man has given so large a fortune for the benefit of his fellow-man.

I trust your lonely hours will be cheered in the happiness you will enjoy in continuing his works of philanthropy.

Mrs Miles joins me in this expression of sympathy.

I remain With the highest respect Nelson A. Miles Major General U.S. Army

Both men possessed boundless and wise sypmathy for their fellow beings. Greater praise than this can be given to no mortal man. Indeed the unbe-lievers frankly concede this praise to Jesus as a man: and add that sympathy in a man is a more divine excellence than when seen in God.

Posterity will long cherish Governor Stanford's name and yours.

I again transmit my thanks for the very substantial and com-plimentary favors which he and you have rendered to me and mine.

May your days be many and full of peace.

Very Respectfully Frank Miller

Sacramento, Cal. July 15th 1893.

Mrs Stanford Madam.

My son, Cyrus R. Miller, has sent to me, for preservation in our vault, your kind letter written to him at Annapolis in June last. That letter will be treasured in the family for many years. In it you have honored greatly both him and his parents by your kind words.

Therefore do not doubt the sincerity of our condolence which I tender you on your bereave-ment.

For several years past I have openly spoken of Governor Stanford and Rev. Phillipp Brooks as the two great men of the times.

country with sorrow, and, let me assure you, is deeply felt by myself and by all of my family.

Permit me to hope that we may still have the pleasure of seeing you again in Washington. Mrs Morill, Miss Swan and my son James, join me in tendering heartfelt sympathy.

Very sincerely yours Justin S. Morrill
