Mrs. Leland Stanford, Menlo Park, Cala.

Respected Madam:

Permit me to extend my sincere sympathy in your great trial and bereavement. Whilest the loss of so noble, great and good a man to the country at large, will be irreparable, yet what is that in comparison to the severed ties of love, family, husband.

Those who have been called upon to experience the loss of their loved ones can fully

appreciate and understand it. Five years ago I lost a loving wife, and my feelings then, enable me now, to understand the trying ordeal through which you are now passing.

May God in his mercy, give you strength to bear your sudden and terrible affliction.

If not presuming too much in asking, will you kindly have sent me when you feel you can, a picture of your honored husband, for my little 8 year old boy Leland Stanford Raphun.

With deepest sympathy and respect,

Chas W. Raphun

Dear Mrs Stanford

I have thought of you very much recently in your sore affliction and assure you of my hearty sympathy. I loved "the Govr" as we all like to speak of him & felt very near to him in many respects because of his warm hearted sympathy with mankind and of his generous spirit shown on so many occasions.

I was particularly touched by the considerate arrangement for the pall bearers, and that he had not forgotten those honest & faithful engineers, who shared with him in the early struggles of that great enterprise, which meant so much for the country.

I have often thought of the time when yourself, sister & other friends from Sacramento were camping at Donner Lake, at the time when the Govr was struggling with the difficulties of those mountain passes. We were all younger & more elastic then and trials were then overcome with the vigor of buoyant manhood.

I congratulate you on the grand stand you have taken in the management of that large estate and feel that guided as you must be by Gods spirit, to do the right & influence as all your { ?} show, you to be so kind & considerate in the discharge of your important duty, success only must result & good & happiness be enjoyed by many now & in years to come, untold good through many generations.

May God bless & prosper you & may you feel encouraged in your good work is the earnest wish of

Yours very Truly, A. J. Ralston
