My Dear Mrs Stanford

So far away from the world has
God planted this garden of His, that I have not learned
of your bereavement and our loss until the proper
time for a telegram has passed. Still I know
you will pardon the freedom of a letter, for the
regard that prompts it is most sincere. Already
many messages must have told you how deep is the
sorrow the students feel at the loss of their bene-
factor. There is not one of them I am sure,
but regrets that the good Senator might not
be spared longer that they might show him their
gratitude more fully.

Dear Mrs. Stanford if there is any comfort for your
grief in the love and respect of those you have brought
to Palo Alto, be assured you have it. Had the summons
come during the college year, we could have shown you
personally what we find hard to put into words of pen
and ink.
