General Announcement

In Ebell Hall, Los Angeles, January 17, 1900, a meeting of representatives from the literary, social and civic clubs of the State was called for the purpose of considering the advisability of forming a State Federation of Women's Clubs. The result was a permanent organization; officers were elected to serve two years and the Federation accepted an invitation to meet in San Francisco in February, 1902.

The tacit purpose of this convention is to bring the clubs into closer relationship with each other by making them feel the power which comes from union of interests; also to give individual members an opportunity to study the methods of the various clubs, and to enjoy that interchange of thought which must result from such a gathering.

As a means to this end, there will be an excellent program consisting of music, the president's address, reports by district and club presidents and chairmen of the several committees, and papers by specialists in their line of work. Some of the subjects which will be treated are "Influence of the Press on Education," and "Property Rights of Women," to be given on the afternoon and evening of the second day. On the third afternoon, "The Leaven of Books," followed by three other papers which will open the discussion; and, on the fourth morning, "Extension of Clubs among Working Women." There will be a question box, and reorganization and the admission of colored clubs to the General Federation will be fully discussed.

Presidents are invited to bring to the Convention, for exchange, year books, calendars, reports and other printed matter relating to Club work. Their attention is called to Sec. I, Article IV of the By-Laws, which reads: Each Club shall be entitled to two delegates to meetings of the State Federation. Clubs consisting of one hundred members or over, three delegates; of two hundred members and over, four delegates; of four hundred members and over, five delegates; of six hundred members and over, six delegates. No Club shall be entitled to more than six delegates.

Accommodations, conveniently located near Golden Gate Hall, may be secured at one dollar and a half per day, and on an early application to the chairman of the hospitality committee, a limited number of guests will be entertained in the homes of Club membes. The chairmen of the several committees will gladly give information in response to letters of inquiry.

Club women throughout the State! You are urged to be present at this, the first meeting of the State Federation of Women's Clubs, and you are requested to send your names immediately, that the committees may be able to make preparations for the event on an intelligent basis.

Culver, Ind. Dec. the 12, 1901

Mrs Stanford.

Pardon me for writing, but I saw through the Columns of the Chiacago News, that you was giving for the Cause of Education. I have a son past 18 yrs. He is now tending the Culver Military Academy. He plays in the Band and works his way through school, but when he graduates there, he will have to go to a Business College. So I thought I would take it up on my self, to write you

if you had any more money. You wanted to give for Educational work, I would gladly receive it, and if he lives to get through school and get in a business, I shall see that he pays back what ever you should do, for I never can. as I am a poor woman with no home and not strength to work and earn a sum. Now you can write Col. Fleet, superintendent of the C. M. A. and see if my statements are not true. trusting in God, I will close for a early reply.
