but not nearly adequate to the needs of the work & helping of the poor & suffering & those that apply for help. I am wondering if you know anything about the Deaconess work & the self denial practiced by the workers to enable them to do for those whose money & courage have left them with nothing to feed their families with till some kind hand arives [sic] to help & succor the outcasts. O how I have wished I had cents, where others have thousands how gladly would I do something in money if I could not do it in labor. I would send you some of the Deaconess journals if I thought they would reach you, & even this may come to an untimely end as I only know where your home is or has been, & not where I should direct. Now as God has prospered you more abundantly will it not be in your heart to help

them in this their trying time I have never coveted wealth as I have the last few months, to give it to causes that I know to be vast good to the human family & when I see & know of so many who are so good & do every thing possible to help themselves & families & are still counting every cent before spent & hardly knowing where the next one is to come from. I can but pity & feel a great unrest because it is impossible for us to do but little towards their relief, now I know whereof I speak & can give you the best of reference in the Methodist pastors & of other denominations in our town & out of town, so if you wish any as regards my reliability I will with pleasure send them if you will make it known { ? } say. I have more ways that I know of now for my wealth than I can fill but please do send them a letter telling them how much you will do sometime, if you cannot now
