15 Kelvin Grove Liverpool 12 July 1893 Dear Mrs Leland Stanford, It is now quite a number of years, since my friend Mr. D. Delany now residing at Berkeley in your state. Knowing my strong interest in education primary and advanced, was kind enough to send me an account of the magnificent University founded by your late lamented husband & yourself, its nature, extent, trustees etc. I was greatly struck by its comprehensiveness, and avoidance of all chance of sectarian injury, & reproduced in a newspaper the information generally. Mrs Delany afterwards sent me the newspaper containing an account of the opening, which it was delightful to read. I have since heard of its continual success.

My sorrow was as great as my former pleasure when a week or two ago, I read of Mr Stanfords sudden death. Coming after your former bereavement, this will be a heavy trial to yourself, & though I am an entire stranger to you I cannot for bear sending a few lines to express my sympathy. The cloud, though spread by that kindly hand of Him who knows well must indeed be dark for a time. The few lines in verse which I enclose, have no merit but that of intention & their composition has been a slight solace to my own regret. Men like our great trust magnate Mr P I Valks - (great brewer ) & the Earl of Derby have recently died whose contributions in life or death have not been one twentieth of the dowry for ages to come of the Leland Stanford Jr University, their [ ?] estate was $40 millions of dollars

If you have any doubts as to the necessity would be glad to have you make us a visit, and I assure you
