from a vehicle with my little
grand [son] in my arms, and
in clinging to him - to save
him I had my right arm
crushed. no one knows the
suffering I have endured
since. added to poverty not
being able to employ medical
aid, and now I can only
use my right arm at arms
length, and only for a short
time. Mrs Stanford I am
not writing to beg you to sup-
port me or to give me
of your wealth any more
than a pittance of a few
dollars. I know at this most
blessed season when our
Savior was born, all hearts

are open and want to aid the
poor & suffering. I see so
often of your noble deeds,
and generous gifts - that I
have wondered if I may not
send & ask you to help an
old woman & her grand daughter
a delicate young girl working
day by day to support herself.
any charity will be most deeply
& gratefully received. I do not
beg - no I am poor - but shall
I say proud. I too have had
relatives in the Senate of the
United States, but of this no mat-
ter, tis not who I am - tis what
I am. I often sit & think of
you in your lonely sorrow, and
look back to the days where
I saw you in Washington City
