Hunter, Patrick Co, Va. Dec. 24, 1901.

Mrs Jane L. Stanford, San Francisco, Cal.

My Dear Lady :

I saw in a Dec. 9 paper where you had given $30,000,000 to a "university" in your city & I thought as you were so wealthy & was giving so liberally for charitable purposes, I would write & see if you would not be so kind as to assist me so I could educate my little daughter (and only child) whom I am now working so hard to educate. I know you must think this a strange request from a perfect stranger. I'll explain.

When I saw of your donation it came to me at once maybe now if I can explain to this kind lady she will assist me and mine.

God has promised to take care of the widows & orphans & most certainly has so far, for me although I have to work so very hard more than my physical strength will allow some times.

I was left alone 6 years ago with no means of support no health, but God was so merciful as to restore that & my education being limited I had resort to the "Public Schools of my State" for a living which will seem quite small to one of your means

I can only get employment 5 mos. in the year at $20.00 per mo. which is not but little for 2 persons who have no other way to live & I tell you I have to live quite economical so I can have necessary clothes & something to eat. I get nothing except by hard labor.

This is certainly a small sum. I pray each day for God to help me educate my child but I think it will take me a long time to save any money for my little girl. I am at present teaching where I have to walk 1 1/2 miles the muddiest way I ever saw & after Christmas, will be compelled to be separated from my little girl.

Will leave Mary Hunter at her grandfathers as she can't stand the walk & the school there is only a short distance. We always stay there during our vacation he is not able to keep us free. So it's hard for me. Of course you don't know any thing about the poor & needy & their wants; if you could only know how I'll have had to scuffle for a living. I am quite sure being a millionaire you would give me some of your money to help me. Mary Hunter will be 12 years in May & I would like so much to educate her she is a bright child & will take an education if she has a chance for one.

Its always been my desire to have her taught music but will not be able without help so its no use to entertain that idea. I will never be able to buy an instrument. I am 38 years old & would be so glad if I could save myself & not be so exposed for my little girls sake. But can't do it. Would you please be so kind as to give me some. God will reward you as I cannot. Dont treat my letter with silent consent. I am not trying to put up a job on you but will give you references if you so desire.

Wishing you a merry Xmas, I am your unknown friend Mrs. Luba H. Tatum
