Dear Madame

Miss Berner sent me the inscription you wanted
to be written on the mosaic picture on the front
facade of Church. We made a lot of trials, but
find it is absolutely impossible to succeed because
there are too many words. The letters would be
so small that I consider quite useless to put
them because nobody will be able to read them.
I therefore must ask you either to select a
verse with a few words or to abandon any
writing there- because I can assure you that
the expression of Christ- whose figure is quite
finished--tells the meaning of Mathew's verse -
just the same. I have written to Miss Berner
that the inscription cannot be put on the
two sides because it would be cut by the
trees & mountains, the space occupied by the
gold ground is too small to allow so many
words to be written -

I therefore have to beg of you to let it go -
or to send me by return of mail another ver[se]
