Mrs. Jane L. Stanford, Palo Alto,

Dear Madam,

It has occurred to me that my absence from the State might interfere with the execution of the Trust for finishing the building. In view of that I present to you my resignation from that Trust so that you can accept it if you desire and put some one on in my place.

And this reminds me again that the University Trust is in a very lame condition and that when I am gone it is going to be difficult to obtain a quorum. Looking at it in this light, I will tender you my resignation as a Trustee of the University Trust to be accepted if you so desire and if greater formality is necessary I will send it to you in more formal manner.

One more word before I close. I have thought over the names of many persons who might fill the bill for another Trustee but no name occurs to me as available as that of Frank J. Symmes, he is an old citizen, a man holding a degree from the Scientific School of Harvard University, President of the Central Trust Company, a banking corporation of this city, President of the Merchants Association which has done so much good to this municipality; he is a religious man, having served for many years among the trustees of
