To The Honorable Mrs J. L. Stanford

Dear Madame

I have been a long time thinking about writing you a note of thanks for the great favor you have done me by having my husband placed in his former position with the R R Co - but was afraid I might [insert: be] intruding on you This day I made up my mind to write you

and beg at the same time you will excuse if I intrude on you - I will now draw your attention to me. It is just one year ago since I applied to you asking you to intrust yourself to have my husband get his position from the S P R R Co he lost in consequence of my illness and was two years out of employment which left us in very straitened circumstances. In your great kindness you gave me the letter for my husband to present to Mr [A W Towne?] Your letter was honored at once and my husband was placed at once in position and is there from that day to this and hope to remain there long as he wants to works - he has worked for the company

over twenty years at Sacramento and was placed there by the [insert: late] Governor Stanford your I will say blessed husband May his Soul be in the Kingdom of Heaven and also the Soul of your darling boy - And now dear Madame not one day of my life has passed since I saw you but I have offered my humble prayers to the Great God and His Holy Mother for to grant you what you stand in need of and to protect and guide and guard you and will continue my prayers for you. I never forget you on Sundays at what we Catholics call the holy sacrifice of the Mass -

We are both [working?] and saving our money as we hope to be able to go home to our place in another year. We have a nice ranch of 800 acres we bought from the R R Co. but my illness caused us to morgage it. in a short time we will have it paid off. You remember I told you I worked [at dressmaking?] in the White house many years. I now work for [ladies?] in their houses by the day, and have more than I can do. Only think I worked for Mrs. [Regua ?] of [Richmond ?] from 26th January until 5th of June at $3.00 per day which was a great help to me. I was with her when her and daughter paid you a visit lately.

I beg you will excuse me for writing you so mutch [sic]. I will end by saying from my very heart an[d] soul may our Heavenly Father and his blessed mother bless and protect you. Believe me your very resp'd Mary E. Dermot

Washington, D. C. Jan. 1, 1894.

Mrs. Stanford,

Dear Madam :-

I suppose I should first tell you who I am, and then ask you to pardon me for presuming to write to you. My name is Ada E. DeMott. I am fifteen years old, and attend the Wallach School of this city. My Papa, Mamma and I moved here last June from Long Island, in New York state. My Papa came here to go into business, but although he brought with him the very best references he was unable to get anything to do all through the summer and autumn. He has now opened an Academy and gives instruction in Shorthand, Typewriting and Art work. He also gives lectures on Astronomy. When he gives lectures I work the lantern, putting in and taking out the pictures. I am learning Shorthand Writing; and I write this letter all myself on the Remington Typewriter.

Now I have told you who I am, I will tell you why I write to you.

I read a little item about you in a paper published on Long Island, which I cut out and inclose herewith. After reading the article, I thought it would be a very pleasant thing to write a letter to you, and if I should get one in return from you I shall prize it very highly indeed. I also thought that you might like to
