My dear Mrs Stanford

I hope you will
not be disappointed
that I cannot come
to you for the
inauguration.
There has been so
much sorrow
in my family
this winter. I feel
that it behooves
me to be quiet
and my Nellie

[left side]

asked her if that
would do; she said
yes, but after it was
dispatched to the
office, she remarked
I wish you had not
said so & so. and
when I asked her
why she had not
said so earlier she
replyed [sic] that you would
then have written it
all over again.

Please remember me
to the Senator and do
make my apology for the
above mistake. Hoping
to see you soon believe
me always your devoted
friend
