Genl Grant worked and did
great service for the Nation
and the Nation should have
cared for him. The people
seem to think a great mans'
son and wife ought to, not, only be liberal
but magnificent. Well I do the
best I can with my small talent
and hope that it will not be
taken from me and given to
him that hath more. But
rather that my "talent" may be
added to. - I want you to read
this little criticism on a little
article I wrote for a world Columbian
fair book. Do read it and kindly
return it to me again for I am

The last three words, "His wife is," are crossed out. I don't know how to show that in the transcription. I think the first word in line three is 'cared,' and have no idea what the last word is. I have not seen enough of this writing to figure it out.
