intending to stop for three
or four day on our return
and hoped to find you
in Washington, but now
since you are gone I
will not stop.

I know you do not favor
my parting with my
house. But you will I know
when you learn that Gen'l Grant
recommended me to part with it,
when I could secure as good a
price as it cost us. I really feel
quite forlorn at parting with my house myself
and dread it. I have had so many
happy days there, and you know
too of all the sorrowful ones I have
passed, so I am only carrying out
