telegraphed President James of the Lincoln National Bank, to see her and advise her not to go, dear little woman she seemed so helpless and alone - I have not heard from her since I saw her. I have been only tolerably well this winter, have not been out socially even once, My Nellie is better, her two daughters are spending the winter with their Aunt in London. I enjoyed a nice long visit from Mr Fred Grant and Miriam, Ulysses eldest daughter this winter.

Hoping that this will find you well when it reaches you, and that you will soon be coming home again, and that I may have the pleasure of greeting you

Yours with sincere & loving regard Julia D. Grant

I hope dear Mrs Stanford, you will have a very pleasant trip abroad, and return safely to your home and friends in America - I am glad to inform you that Julia is quite well again, and her mother has returned from Kissin, my Nellie is better than for ten years past - which makes me very hapy.

Affectionately your friend Jula D. Grant per W.

My dear Mrs. Stanford

In your last letter you mentioned wanting to secure a maid and companion that spoke German and French - if Bertha is not with you any longer, as I infer. I would like to recommend to you in Bertha's place Miss Anne Held, who is a strong, healthy capable person who speaks both French & German (she is a German woman) Miss Held has been governess for my son Ulysses' family for about eight years. She has also travelled with some young ladies of New York, I know, as
