EXECUTIVE MANSION, WASHINGTON. (while in S.F.) April 1891

Please excuse this letter as I was interrupted by many calls.

My Dear Mrs Stanford

I received your card yesterday & felt such a disappointment that I might not see you again before we left your delightful city, but I know you feel some anxiety & care for your good husband & I know your first duty is to him. I do hope he may soon recover from this attack of the grippe & feel himself again. I enclose to you a little note of thanks to yourself and ladies for the beautiful souvenir which I found in the parlor on my arrival here. I believe you are the chairman of the reception committee of ladies & I am glad of that for the reason it gives me an opportunity to write this personal letter to you. I express to you my warm feelings which have been so increased by my closer association with you when you address me

in the future please leave off all titles & call me friend which I desire so much to be. When I think of you both & the great sorrow that has come into your life & see the great benefactions which occupies every moment that is left to you both I do believe the good Lord will say "Well done good & faithful servants" &, I cannot express to you my great happiness & satisfaction in knowing you more & better & of being able to call you my friend for it is the grace of the spirit that forms the most lasting & satisfactory cord of friendship. I shall be glad to hear from you whenever you can write for I shall be anxious to know how the Senator & yourself getting along. Hoping that you may both be renewed in health & that many years may be in store for you, to bless those with whom you are known & praying that much good & happiness may accompany you where ever you may be

I am most affectionately yours Caroline S Harrison
