My Dear Mrs Stanford
We arrived home night before last & this is the first opportunity to write you that I have had since I left San Francisco & secured the beautiful gift you send by Carter I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the beautiful present, not
only on account of its own worth but because it speaks to me of you. I sense I have learned to know you & the Senator I see the good & happiness you are scattering on your way. I feel greatly drawn to you & most gladly claim you as a near friend. I must again thank you for the great pleasure you gave us all while with you & if you could only

Dear Mrs. Stanford
I am in receipt of another of your kindnesses in the way of some of your delightful wine. I cannot express my thanks to you. [Your?] gifts to me have been so great & many - I know it is all done out of the fullness of your great heart & I hope you will understand
how fully I appreciate them all - as I have done the friendship you have bestowed on me I am so glad to learn through Miss McCarty that Senator Stanfords health has so improved I only hope (as I have said before) that his health may be fully restored & that you may both live to see your great charities bring forth great fruits

I can but admire the wisdom you have both shown - in dispensing your great gifts yourselves & not leaving it for others who have not the same interest in rightly disposing of the trust. We came down here (the children & myself) a week ago. The heat in Washington was intense & we were glad to get a breath of sea air. You have probably seen that my daughters are in Europe & I have the delightful charge of Mrs McKee's children in her absence. Mrs George B. Williams came down with me & desires me to send her love to you. I am very fond of her & you know what good company she is. Again, my dear Mrs Stanford I thank you for your last gift & especially the kind thoughts which prompted it. I wish a great deal of love to yourself & good husband.
I am most sincerely your grateful & loving friend
