Dear Madam.

My wife,
Mrs. Isabella B. Hooker, who had the
pleasure of your personal acquaintance,
as I have not, wishes me to write you
for her, as I am helping her in her
epistolary work. She has been all
summer overwhelmingly busy at the
Chicago Fair, having public duties
to perform as one of the Board of Lady
Managers, and postponed writing you
after receiving the sad intelligence of
Senator Stanford's death, in June,
until she should get back to Hart-
ford, which she then expected
