Senator Stanford's noble [career ?] ought
to have some such memorial, to
speak to others in all the genera-
tions to come. He was good enough [to]
say to me what his purpose was
for the American University when he had
advanced further with the Leland Stan-
ford Jr. University, and I must think
that his departure - if such it can be
called, though I believe him still pres[ent]
is not in the end to interfere with
his plans. As Bishop Newman is
one of our Trustees, I am sure you
will be so good as to write him
about it, when convenient
