[--Dear--] Mrs [insert: JL] Stanford

Dear Madam,

The new [insert: University] Register is [--about to be--] now being printed and [--such][--some--] certain announcements as [--refer--] to next year should be made in it.

I would like your permission to add $5. each semester to the registration fees of the first year [insert][of?] freshmen students and [--to those--] of the [/insert] and special students, [or?][--illegible--] students admitted with examination.[--and to--] [insert: this sum to be] added [--this amount--] [--illegible--] to the salary fund, for next year.

The salaries [insert: of the faculty] are still sealed down some 6 per cent below [this?] nominal figure, [--but--] I do not however ask to increase them: [crossed out] only to get money enough in addition [to?][/crossed out] from [--the new students, to enable us to that we can--]
