LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT Stanford University, Cal. August 25, 1904

Mrs. Leland Stanford, The Tallac Lake Tahoe, Cal.

Dear friend:

I will send as requested copies of the two letters of Mr. Horace Davis. I sent you copies of the answers because one of the letters was directed to you, and Mr. Davis said that he had sent copies to Judge Leib and yourself. I think that there will be no difference of opinion between him and me on these points when all the facts are understood. We shall be very glad to welcome you home.

Very sincerely yours, David S Jordan

Stanford Sept 5, 1904

Mrs. Stanford Dear Friend:

I send a clipping which is in several papers. What is your wish concerning laying the corner stone of the new library?

Yesterday you referred to the possibility of choosing a clergyman as a trustee. Perhaps you had in mind

Dr. Bradford Leavitt, the successor of Dr. Stebbins.

Dr. Leavitt is a scholar and a gentleman, a graduate of Harvard - and he would, I believe, make an admirable trustee. I know that Mr. Davis thinks very highly of him.

Very truly yours, David S. Jordan

Mrs Stanford My dear Friend:

I do not think that you would have objected to what I actually said to the students. I have made it very clear to professors and students that we do not look forward to large numbers nor to a great variety and range of departments, but to making our teaching in all departments as excellent as the buildings are. My ideal like yours has been a relatively small number of graduates, each one thoroughly trained.

I am in the fullest

sympathy with the plan of putting up the buildings first and building them as they should be.

I am also in the fullest sympathy with the plan of setting aside a large sum each year, perhaps $200,000, to be added to the principal, and I have been very patient (for me) with the necessary limitations in this period of building.

But it is my duty to look after the weak places in the University and I know, and our
