OFFICE OF ESTATE LELAND STANFORD AND JANE L. STANFORD San Francisco, Cal.

San Francisco, Jan. 14th,1902. Dear Sister:I am in receipt of your communication of Jan. 6th and note what you say of your right to invest money belonging to the University as you seem best. I do not think anyone takes an opposite view to this, at least I do not. I also note what you say regarding the sale of the Market Street property. At this date it is still a question as to whether the Baltimore Syndicate will take the same or not. I have spoken with one or two of the parties who are largely interested and while they were in hopes the deal would go through, still they are not so sanguine as they were 60 days ago, and the parties who put up the $250,000 may be willing to forfeit that amount. I do not consider this road sold until all those interested have received the money. Regarding the floor of the Church. Mr. Gilleti, Mr.McBain(of the firm of Gladding Mcbean & Co.) also Mr. Clinton Day visited the Church last week, and supports are being put under the floor to make it strong enough for Mr. Gilleti to lay his tiling. He is now laying some of the tiling in the center of the Church where it is sufficiently strong enough for this work. Mr.Gilleti informed me last week when I met him on the street, that he would not put in the floor until it was strong enough and he was fully satisfies that it would hold the tiling, and he so informed Mr.Day. Mr. Day was in my office this morning and informed me that he will go to Palo Alto to-morrow Wednesday and see how they were getting along. I am in receipt of your registered letter of Jan.8th regarding a certain amount of money to be forwarded monthly to Mr.A.P.Stanford. First draft will go forward today. I am

also in receipt of your telegram authorizing me to sign a contract with Mr. McGilvray to go on his bid for the Terrance also lowest bid for Chemical Laboratory and have work begun immediately. Mr.Day will make out the contract for Mr.McGilvray but when I will get bids from Mr.Hodges I cannot say. It has been a week since we opened the bids but I suppose he is like all the rest, inclined to take things easy. It makes me tired to get anyone to take any interest in the work. I was also in receipt of your telegram informing me that the last operation was over and as soon as the wounds were healed you would start for home. I had Sloanes man visit yourhouse to take measure for rug in you bedroom and this morning I wired you the size. We are all enjoying good health here and I hope on receipt of this it will find you enjoying th same. With love, I remain Your affectionate brother Chas. G. Lathrop

OFFICE OF ESTATE LELAND STANFORD AND JANE L. STANFORD San Francisco, Cal.

San Francisco, Jan. 16,1902. Dear Sister:Your two communications of Jan. 10th just received and I am pleased to know that you had an opportunity of visiting the opera and you enjoyed the same. Regarding the screens for the windows, the bids have just come in and the men will immediately go to the university and take measurements for the same. A number of times I spoke to Mr.Hodges regarding the screens for the windows and he said we were to furnish all but three, and he said he would speak to Mr. Gunn who is the gentlemen who came from the east and is setting the windows. It seems nothing was done until last week when the matter came up and I had two firms figure on the screens. I have given them instructions however to push the work forward as rapidly as possible. Regarding Mr.McGilvrays bid for the terrace, which you telegraphed me to sign, would say I really did not like to sign this, as it struck me as though the estimate was very high, although I may be wrong. It did not seem to be as though you understood what he called rubble to be laid on the front. I am glad however that you decided to leave this until you return as I think it better for this matter to be talked over again so you might thoroughly understand it. Mr. Day had the contract ready and was at my office this morning. He also informed me that he received a letter from you, and I told him that it would not be long before you return home, and to leave the contract for you to look into. I am in receipt of a registered letter this morning, containing certificate of Deposit representing 250 shares Preffered Stock American

-2Cotton Co. also Certificate of Deposit representing 125 shares Common stock of American Cotton Co. The weather this morning looked like rain, and which we are sadly in need of, but I am afraid it will blow over, but hope not. It is mt intention if possible to go to Vina to-morrow Friday night and will probably be gone 2 or 3 days. I am pleased to say we are all quite well [crossed out] at home and I hope on receipt of this it will find you enjoying the same. With love, I remain Affectionately yours [illegible] Lathrop
