Mrs. Leland Stanford, Palo Alto, Cal.
Dear Mrs. Stanford:
I have been reading a sketch of Mr. Stanford's life-work, and of your personal attention to educational objects.
I am trying very hard to get an education, and have succeeded in going two years to an academy. I desire so much to teach and feel that I can if I can secure enough education. My mother, however is almost an invalid and it is a great expense. I thought perhaps you could sympathize with girls. If you could send me a small amount to finish my academic course, then it would be a blessing. I wish that some day I could see you and come to your university for I mean to have a good education some day, so I can repay my parents for their expense of my schooling. Trusting all will be well,
I am very sincerely yours, (Miss) Elsie K. Lathrop

My dear Mrs Stanford
I send with this my dear little girl and boys' pictures. They are great, great, grand children of Rev. Dr Lathrop of West Springfield, and as Mr Hewes told us you very so much interested in the Lathrops. I thought you might like to have them.
I wanted both the children to have my name. So they are called Elizabeth Lathrop Rowell, and Philip Lathrop Rowell.
Hoping you may care a wee bit for what is so dear to me.
I am one of the Lathrops, Bessie Lathrop Rowell
