#21 Salvatierra J.L. Stanford Univ Jr Nov 13th Mrs Jane L Stanford Dear Madam. I called on you some days ago in company with another student to see about getting adobe and loam from the estate with which to grade my place on Salvatierra N. and was refered by you to Mr. Lathrop. The permission to take the soil was refused. I have since then been trying to buy enough dirt around here to do the grading, but the man who is doing the work tells me he can get no more to finish with, unless he is allowed to take it from the Estate. It seems rather hard that I should not be allowed to have enough soil to put on the grounds, especially as it belongs to the university, & will some day revert to it. Before I built I was given to understand Mr. Hodges that under certain conditions I should be able to get it from the Estate for grading. It has come to the pass that unless can get dirt from the estate I shall be unable to finish grading at all the grounds surrounding my house will always be unsightly. [ ?] these circumstances I trust you may see fit to reconsider the [ ? tion.] Very respectfully yours, Robert M. Louer.

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of an annual pass for 1895 between San Francisco and Red Bluff, sent to me with your compliments, for which accept my sincere thanks.
I desire to congratulate you on, what seems to me, the splendid progress you have made so far with your husband's estate; considering the stringency in the financial world, to pay so much of the indebtedness as you have done, is more than one could have hoped. I trust that the claim made by the Federal Government may be speedily disposed of to your

satisfaction, so there may be nothing to interfere with your completing the plans in regard to the University that you and the Senator matured, and which I know you are so anxious to execute.
I shall always hold in grateful remembrance the Senator's many kindnesses to me, as well as the pleasant relations I have had with you since he was taken away, and whenever there is anything at Vina or elsewhere, in which you think I can be of any service, dont hesitate to command me, as it will be a great pleasure for me to endeavor at least to further your interests,
